I have a Synology NAS DS414 for 6 months. Associated with 4 disks Seagate Barracuda 7200. 14 2TB, this gives a usable volume 5. 81 Tb in SHR (raid 5 made in synology). The assembly is effected without screws, the drives are sliding in a small rack, one branch, and let the NAS format the volume (depending on the size of the volume, the operation can take several hours!). The object is compact enough and lightweight without the drives, relatively quiet (in silent mode and not performance), it would be perhaps even more with disc style series Green from Western Digital, which adapts the speed of rotation of the discs. The disks will be heated not (~ 35°), despite it being turned on H24. I regret finishing all plastic, for around 400€, it is a pity, but it's still well finished and well assembled : no vibration, everything stays in place. It corresponds perfectly to my needs: downloads the of torrent, data replication, iscsi storage for virtual machines. The software suite DSM 5 brings a real added value to this NAS : DSM is very ergonomic, kind of mini-operating system, web, package manager allows to extend the functionality of the NAS. SHR has another advantage in my eyes, it is the ability to read the disks under Linux. There are also applications (Video, Music, Photo, Cloud, etc.). The time backup is very handy and makes us think of time machine Apple. By against the backup seems not to be differential, it's full each time, so plan for a big external drive, USB3 in addition to time backup and backup in general. Only downside, the photo app that is a bit simplistic. I desperately looking for the way to rename photos using their exif info when loading into the app picture because sometimes I have photos from different cameras but the same brand and therefore with the same way to name images.
